Truth is, a bit like Dr Johnson’s first English dictionary, published in the 1700s, which was sometimes seen as a joke for “schoolboys to look up rude words”, the internet was initially viewed in the same way and became the primary new model for the distribution of porn and jokes. The internet was still viewed by most as being relatively untrustworthy for financial transactions and shopping. Recently, however, the primary usage of the internet has begun to change, and porn is starting to drop down the rankings, being replaced by new business sectors.
The key to understanding the internet of the future is to identify more of what those sectors will be. Social Networking, finance and shopping are just three of the sectors now being trusted by more and more of the general population. For example, site names like facebook.com and flickr.com would not have been easily identifiable a few years ago as being brands having any value, or even what such sites would be used for, yet in a very short space of time they have become 2 of the new wave of popular sites.
